AUSSIE AGENCY, STUDIO SHOWOFF, FEATURE ALONGSIDE TIMOTHÉE CHAMALET ON LONG-RUNNING US HIT SHOW SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
Studio Showoff, an animation house based in Brunswick (Melbourne), has animated a three-minute sketch featuring the voice of Hollywood star Timothée Chalamet as a tech bro style God fumbling his way through the creation of Earth. The Aussie studio created the animated skit for long-running US sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live.
Led by Ivan Dixon and Sean Zwan, Studio Showoff is best known for producing music videos for the likes of Childish Gambino, Elton John, Gotye and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, intro sequences for The Simpsons, Rick & Morty and Adventure Time as well as TV series work for major networks, including an animated companion to last year’s Amazon series Fallout, based on the popular video game.
Chalamet guest hosted the January 25th episode of Saturday Night Live, which is in its 50th season. The sketch, written by Streeter Seidell and Mikey Day and directed by Leigh McGrath, had an unusually tight turnaround, typical for SNL however unusual for animation.
Dixon commented: “Very few cartoons are broadcast live. It’s a terrible strain on the animator’s wrist. Normally something this length would require months to make. We had just six days to animate, but they really wanted Chalamet to voice the main character, so what are you gonna do?”
“Showoff is proudly an artist-led independent local studio here in Melbourne. We have a talented young crew of animators and creators who will throw their hat in the ring for any genre or style of animation, but at the core our true love has always been comedy. To be asked to be a part of one of the most prolific comedy sketch shows of all time was a dream come true,” said Zwan.
Chalamet is starring in the Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” in theatres now. Saturday Night Live is currently streaming on Binge.
